EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
(INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS)

610 Administration Building
Telephone: (570) 208-5913

The Center for Experiential Learning is the centralized office at King's College that develops, coordinates, and supervises internship opportunities for junior, senior, and graduate-level students from nearly every academic major program. The goal of the Experiential Learning Program is to assist students in participating in academically supervised, professional-level, hands-on work experiences. Through experiential learning, student interns are given the opportunity to apply the theoretical learning of the classroom to practical, real-world situations and settings. For those students with clearly defined career goals, the internship offers a chance to develop expertise, hone specific skills, and get a "foot in the door." For those who have not yet chosen a career path, internships offer the chance to sample a career field to explore options and clarify personal and professional goals.
Additional benefits of Experiential Learning include the opportunity to...
o Earn college credits while gaining professional work experience.
o Enhance confidence in self and career choices.
o Network and establish valuable contacts in the work world.
o Build an effective resume in preparation for the full time job search.
o Make a smoother transition into full time profes-
sional employment.
The Internship Program is open to each student who has completed 60 credits, has maintained a G.P.A. required by the Center for Experiential Learning and major department, has completed departmental prerequisites, and has incurred no serious student conduct violations. G.P.A. requirement information is available by speaking with the director.
Internships are available during the three main college sessions…fall, spring, and summer. Each placement lasts a duration of 12-15 weeks and may occur on a part-time or full-time basis depending upon the needs of the intern and sponsoring organization. All internships involve a minimum of three or six academic credits…there are no non-credit internships. In the case of exceptional full-time internship programs, additional credits may be earned. Approximately 175 King's students complete internships each year.
Internships for King's students take place at both large and small, public and private, for-profit and non-profit organizations in all economic and geographic sectors. Examples of participating sites include:
Nabisco, Inc. The White House
Prudential Securities U.S. Dept. of State
Mercy Health Partners Walt Disney World
Big Brothers/Big Sisters The First Union Arena
Application to the Internship Program should begin at least one semester prior to the desired placement. For information, see the director of the Center for Experiential Learning, in the Administration Building, Suite A-610.
