King’s Ranks High in Meeting “Public Obligations” Survey

August 25, 2010 - King’s College has been recognized as among the best bachelor and master degree granting institutions in the country in rankings which stress service to the community and social mobility of the student body.

King’s ranked 30th of all “master’s universities” in the United States and one of only four Pennsylvania colleges ranked in the top 50 (Villanova, University of Scranton, and Gannon University).  The rankings appear in the September/October issue of “Washington Monthly” magazine in a story headlined “A Different Kind of College Ranking.”  The rankings were based on three evenly weighted selection criteria; social mobility, research, and service.

King’s ranked among the top 10 master’s universities in the country and the best in Pennsylvania in the social mobility category.  Based on the average standardized test score of incoming first-year King’s students and the fact that 27 percent of King’s students receive federal Pell Grants, King’s actual graduation rate of 73 percent resulted in one of the highest national differences from the “expected” graduation rate of 50 percent.

King’s also ranked 13th and 11th respectively among all master’s degree universities in “community service participation and hours served” and “service staff, course, and financial aid support,” two of the five criteria in the service category.  The rankings were based, in part, on the number of students participating in service projects; the number of service hours performed; the number of full-time staff supporting community service; the number of academic courses that incorporate community services; and whether or not the university provides scholarships for community service.

“This latest recognition reinforces King’s competitive national position among much larger institutions for an unparalleled public service commitment and the College’s emphasis on providing a quality education to students from working class families,” said Father Thomas O’Hara, C.S.C., president of King’s.  “King’s has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts every year of its existence and the College was recently included in a national guidebook which highlights educators ‘committed to serving and supporting today’s first-generation, low-income and traditionally underserved college-bound students.’  We are also a young college relative to others on this list, but we have been able to remain committed to these King’s hallmarks because of the continued presence of the founding Holy Cross Congregation and the positive feedback received from our current students and alumni.”

King's College is a Catholic College sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross.
