August 18, 2010 – King’s College junior Parveen Merchant has been selected as one of 50 students nationwide to participate in a leadership program offered by Oxfam America, an international relief and development organization based in Boston.

Merchant, an accounting major with a minor in human resources, was selected for the Oxfam America CHANGE Initiative. Students commit to Oxfam America for an academic year on their campuses in work related to Oxfam’s mission of alleviating poverty. A King’s student was also selected to participate during the 2009-10 academic year.

She recently completed a week-long advocacy and leadership training session in Boston, where she expanded her knowledge of global issues. Topics included climate change, hunger, poverty, and emergency response.

Merchant, a resident of South Brunswick, N.J., has established an Oxfam Club on campus, which will host a number of events throughout the academic year to raise student awareness about climate change, women’s rights, economic justice, and the global food crisis.

She recently completed a summer internship in the human resources department at Frontier Communications. Following graduation, Merchant plans on attending graduate school and volunteering in the local community.
