King’s professor Dr. Jonathan Malesic book wins ForeWord Magazine gold medal

July 6, 2010 – “Secret Faith in the Public Square: An Argument for the Concealment of Christian Identity,” a recently published book authored by Dr. Jonathan Malesic, assistant professor of theology at King’s College, was awarded a gold medal in the religion category of the Book of the Year Awards presented by “ForeWord Reviews.”

“ForeWord” is the only review trade journal devoted exclusively to books from independent houses. The Book of the Year Awards were established to bring increased attention to librarians and booksellers of the literary and graphic achievements of independent publishers and their authors.

At a ceremony recently held at BookExpo America in New York City, “ForeWord” named Book of the Year Award winners in 60 categories. The books, representing the best independently published works from 2009, were selected by a panel of librarian and bookseller judges.

In the book, Malesic examines the tradition and practice of keeping faith separate from public life. Going against the general theological trend of advocating an ever more visible presence for Christianity in American public life, he argues that the best way for Christians to be caretakers of their tradition and to love their neighbors selflessly is to conceal their religious identity.

A professor at King’s since 2005, Malesic currently teaches courses on the theology about Jesus, and how individual lives are shaped by western religions. He has written several essays for the “Chronicle of Higher Education,” as well as articles on Christian thought and modern secular philosophy for the academic journals “International Journal for Philosophy of Religion” and “Journal of the American Academy of Religion.”
