For immediate release King’s Research Project to Survey Local Interest in Arts in Education July 13, 2010 – Researchers at King’s College are conducting a survey of Luzerne County parents to investigate how children experience art within local school settings. The results will be used to gauge parental interest in supplementing arts education in local communities. Included in the idea of arts integration are the use of movement as well as imaginative play and music and the experience of the natural environment as creative outlets. Drawing, painting, and other traditional art forms also are considered in the idea of arts integration both as tools for learning as well as subjects in the elementary school curriculum. The survey is being made available to the public through mid-August. Copies of the survey can be obtained at ArtsYOUniverse, King's College Early Learning Center, Andrea Bogusko Music Center, Barnes & Noble College Bookstore, Kidtunes Guitar Program, David Blight School of Dance, Joan Harris Conservatory for the Arts, and libraries in Nanticoke, Pittston, Plymouth and West Pittston. Researchers also will be distributing the survey on Thursdays during the Farmers Market on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre. The survey is also available at http://staff.kings.edu/cindypostma/. Taking approximately 10 minutes to complete, the survey is intended for Luzerne County parents. Interested parents also are invited to attend a series of events anticipated for the summer and fall, which will feature guest speakers, informational displays, and community discussions about ways to improve children’s experience of the arts in schools. Each event is free and open to the public; details to be made available at http://staff.kings.edu/cindypostma/, where an updated list of survey locations also can be found. The research is being supervised by King’s College faculty member and Assistant Professor of History, Cindy Postma, with the collaboration of members of the King's College academic community. Funds for the project have been provided by the King’s College Shoval Center. King's College is a Catholic College sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross. |
