Dr. Donald Kraybill to discuss how Amish forgiveness transcended tragedy during lecture at King’s

April 6, 2010 – Renowned Anabaptist scholar Dr. Donald Kraybill will discuss the Amish reaction to the Nickel Mines shooting during a free, public lecture at King’s College at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, April 15, in the Burke Auditorium, William G. McGowan School of Business, located on North River Street.

Dr. Kraybill will discuss his new book, titled “Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy,” which examines the Amish understanding of forgiveness and response to the Nickel Mine school killings. He will also explain Amish terms of forgiveness and how it parallels and diverges from other religions. Dr. Kraybill co-wrote the book with David L. Weaver-Zercher and Steven M. Nolt.

In October 2006, Charles Carl Roberts IV barricaded himself inside the West Nickel Mines Amish School in Lancaster, and shot and killed five girls (aged 6-13) before committing suicide. Five other students were badly wounded. Dr. Kraybill will explain how the Amish community immediately responded with forgiveness and comforted the shooter’s family.

Distinguished College Professor and Senior Fellow in the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College, Dr. Kraybill received his doctorate in sociology from Temple University. He is editor of “Young Center Books in Anabaptist and Pietist Studies,” a series published by the Johns Hopkins University Press.

Dr. Kraybill has authored more than 20 books, and received numerous awards including the National Religious Book Award for “The Upside Down Kingdom.” He has authored or coauthored seven books on Amish life and culture, including “The Riddle of Amish Culture,” “The Amish and the State,” and “Amish Enterprise: From Plows to Profits.”

A book signing follows Dr. Kraybill’s presentation. For more information, please contact Dr. Beth Admiraal, associate professor of political science, at (570) 208-5900, ext. 5754.
