For immediate release King’s PA students host drunk driving awareness program, Feb. 24 February 15, 2010- The Kings College Physician Assistant program will host a drunk driving awareness program at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, the in the Burke Auditorium, William G. McGowan School of Business, on North River Street. The program is free and open to the public. During the program, Crystal Gigliotti, a resident of Sugar Notch and a senior physician assistant major at King’s, will speak about the loss of her father, Joseph “Jo Jo” Gigliotti, who was killed by a drunk driver on April 24, 2008. The event will also feature presentations by Emergency Medical Technicians Stacy Kociolek and Matt Morgan, who will discuss first responder experiences at DUI-related accidents. Clearbrook Director of Nursing Christine Kendzor will speak about rehabilitation from alcohol abuse, and Joseph Clifford will represent Mothers Against Drunk Driving. In addition, Dr. Frances Feudale, director of the PA program at King’s College, will share her experiences working in an emergency room treating DUI drivers. King’s PA students Helen Mattson and Jayme Timmons will offer statistics of drinking and driving, while Jason Kendzor will explore preventative measures. During this presentation, guests will have an opportunity to sign two petitions; the first aims to discontinue the boot-camp option for convicted DUI offenders. The option is currently available for 18-24 year olds who have killed someone while driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The law allows convicted DUI drivers the possibility of being released after serving one year in prison and completing a six-month boot camp option, instead of the 3-6 year minimum sentence in Pennsylvania. The second petition is to promote a breathalyzer in all ignition starters of DUI offenders. For more information on the Drunk Driving Awareness program, please contact Chelsea Sprau, event co-coordinator, at (267) 992-1567 or email chelseasprau@kings.edu.
