Mad Scientist | back

This class offers a daily combination of in-class discovery and exploration, outdoor games and physical activities and hands-on applications of the scientific principles presented. Campers create a variety of take-home projects and participate in snack-tivities while exploring how science affects the world around us.  Your children will have so much fun they won’t even realize they’re learning!

Get Out of Your Seat and Move Your Feet | back

It's summer and school’s out, so let's get out and play.  Baseball, soccer, and kickball are some of the games that will have you up on your feet and moving around. In this program we'll not only learn how to play some traditional playground games and indoor games, but also learn proper techniques and the importance of exercise.

Become a Superhero | back
Have you ever wished you could run with super speed, see using x-ray vision, or save helpless puppies? This class, intended for both boys and girls, will explore popular superheroes and make you into a crime fighting machine. You will get to create your own villain too!  We’ll read comics or books about famous heroes, such as Batman and Spiderman, then students will make a comic book in which they make themselves into the hero and create a villain.  Students will decide what kind of powers their superheroes will have, design their costumes, and use material to create capes and masks to wear in class and around campus.  Don’t just read about superheroes – become one in this fun class!

Commotion in the Ocean | back

There is a curious commotion in the ocean, come and take a look. Children will learn about ocean animals and the ocean environment without having to open a book. We will be playing games, doing arts and crafts, making waves and exploring what lives in underwater caves. Come and be an explorer on this exciting voyage under the sea -- it’s sure to be fun! Our voyage can get a little messy so please make sure to wear old clothes to class and also bring along a snack and a drink.

Let’s Get Creative | back

In this program students will explore different art techniques and create several beautiful projects.   Students will use watercolors, tissue paper, plaster, and more to create masterpieces.  Students will also learn about some famous artists and learn about some of their work.

Music Around The World | back

Join the fun and learn about a different country each day, focusing on their music and instruments.  We will visit Africa and make a musical calabash, then travel to Australia and try our skills on an Aborigine didgeridoo.  We will take a trip to Bonnie Ireland and create our own bagpipes, then move on to Nepal and actually play on a two sided drum.  Each day will bring a new and different adventure.  Stories, songs, painting, and of course making music will be jam packed into five days of imaginative fun. As we travel throughout the week we will learn fun and interesting facts about each place we stop as well as experience their musical instruments.

Jigsaw Jungle | back

Where do you begin? The border pieces? The similar colors? It doesn't matter in this Jigsaw Jungle camp. Each student will bring his or her favorite puzzle to camp to share with friends. Then, students will create a big class puzzle where each student will design their very own piece to get to know the other students in the class. Each student will explain their original piece to the class, then put them all together to make a Jigsaw Jungle. You’ll also design your very own puzzle, which you can take home to see if your friends and family can put the pieces back together.

Fun-Filled Science Activities for Young Learners | back

Calling all future scientists! Are you curious about colors? Would you love to learn about dinosaurs, fossils, and volcanoes? Want to know more about your senses?  Then this class is for you! Young children are natural scientists. They ask hundreds of questions and love to explore all kinds of materials, and in this class they will complete activities that interest them again and again. Some examples of the activites that we will complete in this class are: Disappearing Color, Fossilize a Sponge, Solid or Liquid? One of a Kind, and Water Bottle Volcanoes.  Please wear old clothes, and bring a snack and drink to class each day.

Science is Magic | back

Step into the magical world of science with these fun and exciting experiments.  We will make a blizzard in a bottle and also learn how to make snow…Brrr!  Now you see it – now you don’t! You can make styrofoam peanuts magically disappear.  Make a balloon inflate without even touching it!  We’ll also make invisible messages appear like magicians do.  Watch as a rainbow explodes in an array of colors in a pie pan.  We’ll make water and a ball float in mid-air.  After learning how to do all of these experiments and many more, you will be on your way to becoming a super science magician!

The Art of the Doodle | back

Do you love to doodle but want to take it a step further? In this workshop, you'll learn how to put all those doodles together to create many pieces of art featuring dragons, insects, sea creatures, and anything else you can imagine. Students will learn to transfer their doodles to new sheets of paper to color using a variety of mediums, such as markers, crayons, and color pencils.

King’s Mini-Stars: Musical Theater | back

Do you like to dance around the house, or sing in the shower? Can you cry on cue? Do you know every word to your favorite movie? If so, you should be onstage! This camp is designed to give aspiring stars a taste of performing. Campers will begin the week learning basic dance steps and fun songs. We will then combine these talents to create a musical showcase which will be performed at the end of the week for your family and friends. In our performance, everyone is a star.

Sensational Science | back

Why do boats float?  What gives a raindrop its shape?  How do rockets blast off?  Unravel these and other mysteries of our planet!  This interactive week of "hands-on" and "minds-on" experiments gives campers the chance to question, explore, and discover the world around them.  They'll learn why water isn't so ordinary and what it takes to launch their own rocket into space.

Decorative Art | back

Express yourself creatively through decorative art. We’ll design magnets, door hangers, photo frames, note holders, and even learn to sew a cuddly teddy bear and an animal puppet. We’ll make mini bear bookmarkers and wreaths out of foam cut-outs. Its summertime and what better way to take in those warm rays than with a sun catcher that you’ll paint. At the end of the week, take these pieces of art home for yourself or share them with others by giving them in the decorated gift bags we’ll make!

Become a Computer Whiz | back

If you are interested in learning independent computer activities, this is the class for you!  You will acquire the basic skills to become a computer whiz through step-by-step instruction.  Throughout the week you will learn how to use Microsoft Office to open, close, save and print files.  Fun activities will help you locate keys on the keyboard and understand their function.  You will also use the computer to create projects related to the alphabet, numbers, colors, and shapes using typing, clipart, drawing tools and much more!!!

Fun with Food | back

In this class you will “dig up” information about parts of plants and the conditions needed for plants to grow.  In addition to reading story books, viewing pictures, and making crafty creations, you will enjoy creating a snack and participating in a hands-on activity related to the planting theme of the day.  By the end of the week, you will have created your own garden for your home and planted flowers to add beauty within the King’s College community.

Insects, Bats, Dogs, and Cats – Creative Paper Crafts | back

Do you love animals, creepy-crawlies, sea creatures, and such?  Then join us for a weeklong workshop that will teach you how to make playful, interesting crafts using common items such as paper, paper plates, and cardboard.  Students will cut, paste, and decorate a variety of paper creations including a paper-chain caterpillar, an insect mobile, a batty decoration, and many more.

King’s Dance Class | back

Whether you already take dance classes or are thinking of giving it a shot in the fall, this is a great way to get your foot in the door! We will start with the ballet basics and advance from there, leaping into jazz. (Dance level geared to ability of dancers.) For many little dancers, the best part of dance class is the performance. Our dance recital will showcase the dance(s) we learned throughout the week. Parents, get that camera ready to capture your little dancer’s road to Swan Lake!
*Suggested attire is sweatpants, dance pants, or shorts, and either sneakers or dance shoes. Jeans and jean shorts are not suitable.

PowerPoint Pizzazz! | back

This class will begin by experiencing a PowerPoint presentation designed as a virtual field trip to take you to the rainforest!  You will then create your very own PowerPoint presentation which you design using your own style, photos and animations. You will take pictures with a digital camera and learn how to place them into your own PowerPoint presentation while learning skills such as sound effects, graphics and drawing tools. Your presentation will be copied to a CD to share with friends and family!  **Very basic computer skills will be needed for the class.

Ballroom Blitz | back

The hottest dance craze is now part of Kids at King’s!  Local young professionals teach all forms of ballroom dance in an exciting, fun atmosphere.  Learn waltz, tango, cha-cha, swing, rumba, and more.  In true “Dancing with the Stars” fashion, all dance styles are set to modern music.  Who says you can’t tango to Miley Cyrus or swing to Taylor Swift?  This unique spin on a traditional pastime couples technical instruction with fun, fun, fun!  This isn’t your grandma’s ballroom…..this is Kids at King’s ballroom with a twist!

Creatures Galore | back

Do you love animals? Come and explore the wonderful world of animals and insects, their habits and habitats in our weeklong workshop. You will learn how to make scenes with cute and interesting animals and insects, some of which we see during the daytime, and others who only come out at night. Students will cut, paste and decorate a variety of media with paper, paint, glue, wiggly eyes, rhinestones, glass globes, etc. This workshop will be filled with fun activities and interesting information.

Let’s Explore the Rainforest | back

Let’s spend the week visiting the rainforest and learning all about the many creatures and plants that live there.  We’ll read stories such as Under the Great Kapok Tree, Rainforest Babies and more, and explore the diverse and fascinating layers of this tropical area.  Crafts, songs, games and activities will be used to learn about the animals that live in this endangered environment, including tigers, elephants, toucans and monkeys. Lots of take homes and lots of FUN!!

Creative Mud Slinging | back

Playing in the mud has always been fun. Now you can learn how to creatively express yourself in clay. We will explore several hand building techniques, such as pinch pots, coil pots and slab pots and constructions. Students will get to explore a variety of textures that can be imprinted into the clay to create pieces that will expand their artistic horizons. The artists will create ceramic pieces for display at home or to give as gifts. Become known as the latest "MUD" artist.

Upcycled Fashions | back

You’ve heard of recycling, but have you ever heard of upcycling?  Upcycling is the process of converting useless products into new products of better quality or of higher value.  So turn that old tank top into a tote and that T-shirt into a fashionable scarf.  Upcycle those candy wrappers into a pencil case or cosmetic bag.  Turn trash into treasure when you make old jeans into a stylish new purse.  The great thing with upcycling clothing is that you are giving your old clothes a whole new purpose in life.  Bring your inner fashion designer and join us to do chic on the cheap.

In this class, you will make snacks that look good, taste good, and are good for you! I will share my special secret recipes on how to bake healthy. Some examples of tasty treats you will make in this class include Peanut Butter Bars, Fruit Tartlets, and Pumpkin Pies.  We’ll also move away from the healthy stuff just a little and learn how to make chocolate dipped treats. After this class, you’ll be able to make your own treats for hosting a party, prepare a gift for a special occasion, or just treat yourself to a healthy sweet treat.

Fun with Small Works of Art | back

If you like to work on a small scale, or if you're fascinated with miniatures, this is the art class for you. Working with specific size requirements, students will create many pieces of artwork based on two different forms of artwork: original small works of art (OSWA), which measure 4 inches by 6 inches, and artist trading cards (ATC), which measure 3 1/2 inches by 2 ½ inches.  Students will use a variety of different media to create their artwork, and they'll also create unique frames for their artwork, which may be displayed as wall art or used as ornaments or gift tags.

LEGO® Robotics | back

Using LEGO® MINDSTORMS®, students will design and build a real working robot.  The LEGO® MINDSTORMS® kits introduce students to the NXT software which will allow them to program their robots to perform simple tasks and solve problems.  Working in teams, students will challenge their creativity to design and make a LEGO® robot with a working “brain”, while developing skills in math, engineering, and technology.
NOTE:  This is a full-day class, and students must sign up for the whole day.

Ancient Pharaohs’ Art | back

Take a journey up the River Nile on barges with famous archaeologists and discover the tombs and pyramids of the kings. Follow trails and find secrets inside some of the world's most famous pyramids. Create your own portrait as a King or Queen to be displayed on the walls inside the tomb. Design and construct an Egyptian Sarcophagus to encase your favorite mummy. Make your own Canopic Jar to hold the important organs of the person traveling on his afterlife journey and write a secret message in hieroglyphs to store inside the mummy's tomb. Pamper Your Pooch | back

This class will focus on the care of your dog.  Students will make projects like a decorative pet collar, pet toys and homemade dog treats as well as learn the proper care of their dog, from grooming to the care by a veterinarian.  We will explore training of your dog and students will have an opportunity to train an actual puppy.  We will culminate the week with a special "dog" movie and popcorn.

Hey, I’m on the Radio | back

Do you love listening to radio and wonder what it takes to be a good disc jockey?  Is it really just as easy as pushing a few buttons and playing tunes? In this class you‘ll get to see what’s involved with being “on the radio”. You’ll learn about sound editing, using the sound editing program Adobe Audition 1.5, where you can actually SEE what you SAY. You’ll even record your own radio show and learn the tricks of the radio trade. Taught by Cathy Donnelly of Froggy 101 and 102.3 the Mountain.

So, you think you can dance? Do you want to be a Rockette or a part of America’s Best Dance Crew? Step up and take the lead for this dance workshop! This is the perfect opportunity to learn some new tricks and choreography and brush up on your technique before new classes start in the fall. (Dance level geared to ability of dancers.) Learn to express yourself creatively through decorative art. We’ll use colorful Perler beads to design your favorite animal. Do you think you’re an expert at playing board games?  Do you always beat your brother or sister at Monopoly or Sorry?  In this class we are not only going to play games, but design them as well!  We’ll start the week by playing some familiar board games and learning what makes them so good.  We’ll look at the design of board games and the strategy behind them, then use what we learn to invent new board games.  Students can work individually or in teams to develop a new board game, and on the final day students will play each other's games then take them home to share with family and friends.

Science is Magic | back

Step into the magical world of science with these fun and exciting experiments.  We will make a blizzard in a bottle and also how to make snow…Brrr!  Now you see it – now you don’t! You can make styrofoam peanuts magically disappear.  Make a balloon inflate without even touching it!  We’ll also make invisible messages appear like magicians do.  Watch as a rainbow explodes in an array of colors in a pie pan.  We’ll make water and a ball float in mid-air.  After learning how to do all of these experiments and many more, you will be on your way to becoming a super science magician!

Learn to use a variety of tools on the computer to develop a presentation “All About You.”  In this class you’ll type an autobiography in Word, then learn to use PowerPoint to design a slide show about yourself.  You’ll learn how to copy and paste pictures and incorporate fun graphics into the presentation, and also make colorful charts and graphs in Excel.  You will want to “show and tell” what you have done so bring a flash drive to class to save your work.

Staying fit and being in shape is important but not always fun. The best way to stay in shape is to turn your exercises into a game.  During this class, students will learn about the importance of staying in shape and exercising while learning different games.  Each day of the week will focus on a different team game and how the game can help them stay in shape.  Students will learn how to play games like kickball, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee and whiffle ball in a team setting, teaching them the importance of fitness as well as the importance of good teamwork.  Fitness doesn’t have to be boring!

Let’s Go Exploring | back

Are you ready to explore the world around you? Are you ready to get up close with Mother Nature? Participants will become junior field scientists in this class while learning about the ecology in our area.  They will learn how to make a field journal of all the wonderful things we will find on our nature walks.  We will be examining the biodiversity of King’s College and we will be leaving campus to visit the Kirby Park Natural Area.  On Thursday we will be interviewing farmers at the Public Square Farmer’s Market.  The week will conclude with an owl pellet dissection. Participants should dress for the weather, and wear appropriate foot wear, use sunscreen and hats and bring a water bottle.

Camp Survivor | back

Have you ever watched the show “Survivor” and thought that you could never last?  It’s really not as hard as you think.  This week long class will give you the ability to survive if you were lost in the toughest conditions.  Students will learn several things needed to survive in the wilderness including how to build a shelter, how to read a map and use a compass, and how to perform basic first aid skills that they may need to know if they were lost.  On Friday students will put what they learned to the test in the Ultimate Survivor Challenge! Don’t worry about being lost in the woods ever again, after this class you’ll be a SURVIVOR!

This camp introduces robotics technology and increases the functionality and user-friendliness of NXT.  Working in teams, students will design and build a high-tech LEGO® robot, using the NXT software to program their creation to solve problems such as navigating an obstacle course.  This hands-on computer and construction course will enhance students’ skills in the STEM areas (science, technology, engineering, and math) and challenge their creativity in new and exciting ways.

Fun with Small Works of Art | back

If you like to work on a small scale, or if you're fascinated with miniatures, this is the art class for you. Working with specific size requirements, students will create many pieces of artwork based on two different forms of artwork: original small works of art (OSWA), which measure 4 inches by 6 inches, and artist trading cards (ATC), which measure 3 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches. Students will use a variety of different media to create their artwork, and they'll also create unique frames for their artwork, which may be displayed as wall art or used as ornaments or gift tags.

Cuts and scrapes are hard to avoid in life, but what would you do if someone was seriously injured?  This class will teach you basic first aid and what to do in case of an accident.  This class will not make you a doctor, but it will teach you what you can do to help an injured person before the professionals arrive.  Students will learn how to treat for shock and heat exhaustion as well as broken bones and minor cuts and scrapes. The week will conclude with a first aid meet where students will become first responders at a mock emergency and have to help their patients survive.

Sing Your Heart Out | back

Get Wired (Creating Art with Wire) | back

Have you seen the guy climbing up the wall of Marquis Art in Wilkes Barre and thought “Very cool!”?  Would you like to be able to sculpt something like that?  When most people think of sculpture they think of pieces made of wood or clay, but twisted wire is another material you can use to sculpt, and it’s not that hard to do.   In this class you will learn how to take a few strands of recycled copper wire and bend and twist it into the forms of people, animals, and fantasy figures. The Magician’s Craft | back

This class offers a concentrated course in the art of magic. Students will learn professional secrets of the trade and how to stand in front of an audience to perform them. Instruction will be provided by PA’s top professional magician, Damian. Students will understand and perform magic tricks using a quality magic kit that they will keep at the conclusion of the class. Parents and friends are invited to attend a performance by the students and Damian on the last day.  Magic kit included in the price of class.

We'll take you through a typical dance class from warm-up and stretch to skills and tricks across the floor. We’ll put together various mini combinations to create our dance performance for the end of the week. You’ll also get a chance to be the choreographer. You will make up your own part of the dance and teach it to the rest of the dancers for us to incorporate into our performance! It’s time to step up and see just how far you can go!

Do you love listening to radio and wonder what it takes to be a good disc jockey?  Is it really just as easy as pushing a few buttons and playing tunes? In this class you‘ll see what’s involved with being “on the radio”. You’ll learn about sound editing, using the sound editing program Adobe Audition 1.5, where you can actually SEE what you SAY. Have tons of fun finding your creative side. Learn how to use your imagination and draw with confidence, and how to correct some major drawing mistakes. Basic 35mm Photography | back

This class will teach the basics of taking good pictures using a 35mm camera.  Photos will be taken around King’s campus and surrounding areas.  Subjects will include people, nature, animals and sports. Everyone will have the opportunity to use the King’s darkroom to develop their pictures.  Students must provide their own 35mm camera; film will be provided by instructor.

STOMP | back

Do you like noise? Do you like to make noise? Have you ever heard noises made by common objects actually sound like music? That’s what STOMP is all about. STOMP is a hugely successful show that has been performed all over the world. It is not a play, and it has no speech, dialogue or plot. It is percussion created by making noise in rhythm.  Using items such as broomsticks, pots and pans, garbage cans and lids, plungers and even just hand clapping, you will learn to use noise to make rhythm and music.  If you can’t quite get what this class is about, check out some of the stomp videos on YouTube, or go to their website, www.stomponline.com. Camp CSI: King’s College | back

Do you love to solve mysteries?  Do you wish you could learn what Crime Scene Investigation is all about? CSI: King’s College will not only show you, but let you actually perform the functions of crime scene technicians.  This camp will allow students the opportunity to conduct hands-on crime scene investigations using a variety of techniques.  Campers will learn about types of fingerprints, footprints, blood evidence, the steps in processing a crime scene and much more.  Campers will also be instructed on forensics and human identification while reconstructing a human face.  Campers will conclude the week with an actual crime scene investigation scavenger hunt.

Game Mania | back

Do you think you’re an expert at playing board games?  Do you always beat your brother or sister at Monopoly or Sorry?  In this class we are not only going to play games, but design them as well!  We’ll start the week by playing some familiar board games and learning what makes them so good.  We’ll look at the design of board games and the strategy behind them, then use what we learn to invent new board games.  Students can work individually or in teams to develop a new board game, and on the final day students will play each other's games then take them home to share with family and friends.

LEGOS® and Beyond | back

Have you ever dreamed of building a world out of LEGOS®?  Do you drive your family crazy with your wild imagination?  Then this camp is for you, the advanced creator. This camp will develop your skills as a true LEGO® Leader.  Join in and help construct New York City out of LEGO® building blocks.  Be innovative and design a small, unique LEGO® to keep.  This camp is for the more advanced builder and will focus on creating unique architecture with LEGOS® and not simply following directions supplied in kits.

Acting Workshop, Week 1 | back

This two-week workshop is designed to develop techniques of acting. Students will learn the craft through a series of theatre games, monologues, vocal exercises, scene work, and actual performance. Through performance, students will learn various aspects of theatre including make-up, costumes, and scenery. The emphasis of this workshop is on acting and although some experience is recommended, it is not a prerequisite.

Do you wish you could fly like Superman or have super speed like Wonder Woman? In this class you will have the chance to create the superheroes or super villains of your dreams. Students will tap into their creative sides and bring their wildest creations to life. They will design character names, costumes, powers, and modes of transportation. They will also learn the fundamentals of action writing and complete their very own comic book. At the end of the week they will present their original comic book to the class.

M & M Detective Agency | back

Explore and eat your way through the Scientific Method using M & M candies.  This exciting (and tasty) camp will teach a variety of mathematical and scientific concepts including:  hunting for M&M prey in a series of different habitats to discover which M&M's survive in each habitat and why, dissolving the colors on M & M's to determine chemical density, and determining how probable it is that you will reach in a jar and pull out a certain color of M&M.  You’ll also study M&M Camouflage, half-life of M & M’s, and chromatography.  So bring your curiosity (and appetite!) and be ready to explore the colorful world of M&Ms.

Medical Camp | back

Learn about the human body and what makes you who you are.  During this week campers will be “doing the bone dance”, focusing on organs and doing all sorts of fun experiments.  Learn how to measure your heart rate, use home remedies and dissect an organ.  Interactive sessions teach kids about the building blocks of life when they construct models of DNA.  Students will learn the basics of anatomy and biology by dissecting animal organs through online simulations, and become disease detectives by studying the immune system and how medicine works. At the end of the week take all the knowledge you’ve learned to solve a mystery diagnosis from a real emergency room case.

High Flyin’ Adventures | back

3...2...1- CONTACT!  The engine roars to life and the wind rushes in your ears!  The THRILL OF FLIGHT - the exploration of the science and art of flying!  Young pilots will experiment with crafts, design, and gravity, and apply their know-how to help launch a real rocket into the wild blue yonder!  In this session, the high-altitude adventurer will make daring paper airplanes; discover how fuels, pressure, and aerodynamics create lift; and paint and construct their own take-home rocket (launched ON-SITE at the King's campus).  They’ll also get a chance to become virtual pilots through the use of an online flight simulator.  Come fly with us – without leaving the ground!

Survivor | back

Can you make it out alive?  During this week-long camp, campers will be “isolated” on the Island of King’s Stow-Away.  Campers will compete for prizes, vote other campers “off the island” and try to be the remaining camper.  Based on the popular TV show, Camp Survivor will be a test of skill and fun.  Will you be the last camper to survive?  This camp will be staged with characters, so students will play various roles throughout the week.

Fun with Origami | back

Origami is an ancient Japanese art form that involves folding paper into intricate shapes and objects. The most familiar origami creation is the paper crane, but it does not have to end with just a paper bird. In this class you will learn how to make window hangings with light catching beads, mobiles with cranes and other creatures, and even make fashionable jewelry to wear or give as gifts. From learning the basic folds to putting together your final project, it's a fun time for all.
