STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM - STUDENT EXPERIENCES

Mark Esposito
History
Class of 2010
John Cabot University
Rome, Italy

How did you select your Study/Intern Abroad location?

I always wanted to go to Rome, so I went where I really wanted to go. And Mrs. Farmer really helped me choose John Cabot University, which turned out to be the right choice for me.

Why did you want to study or intern abroad?

I wanted to get a different look on the world, and I thought that studying abroad would help me understand how people from a different culture see the world around them. I also wanted to see the world, and this gave me the chance to see one part of it.

What were the highlights of this experience?

The highlights are too many to list, but it was fun seeing the sights and learning about a new culture, plus traveling to the south of Italy and seeing the difference between Rome and some of the towns in the south, such as Capri. Also, just being able to experience Italy without feeling homesick made this the trip of a lifetime.

What surprised you the most?

No air conditioning and the time change, but most importantly how nice people were. I was told that Europeans did not like Americans very much, but it turned out to be a silly misconception; everyone was friendly. And the fact that I made many friends there surprised me as well. Usually I am very shy, but I was more outgoing in Italy than I am in the United States.  I made friends with whom I keep in touch.

How has (or how might) this experience affect your major and future career?

Being a history major and seeing the sights in Rome and some of the digs has really opened my eyes to the possibility of going into archeology here in the United States or maybe abroad, in Italy or elsewhere.

What would you tell students considering studying or interning abroad?

Go where your heart wants to go. Do not go where it is the easiest; I do not speak a word of Italian, yet I went to Italy because I wanted to go. There is a funny story here -- I did try to talk in Italian, and I was told just to speak in English. I would recommend that students in the future should go where they want to. If you want to go to Italy, then go to Italy, or wherever you want to go. EVERYONE SHOULD GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
