Disability Services

The Program
These services recognize the rights of all qualified individuals with disabilities to equal access to an education as guaranteed under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The Disability Services Program at King’s College is coordinated by the Academic Skills Center, located on the lobby floor of the Mulligan Science Center.

Who Is Eligible?
Services are available to any member of the King’s community–student, faculty, or staff member who has a disability. Individuals eligible for service include, but are not limited to, those with mobility, orthopedic, hearing, vision or speech impairments, as well as those with learning disabilities. Individuals with temporary disabilities, such as those resulting from injury or surgery, are also eligible for services.

Services
Students are encouraged to contact the Director of the Academic Skills Center at the time of their admission to King’s College to discuss their concerns and to develop appropriate plans to meet their educational needs. A request for services or accommodations is initiated by registering with the Academic Skills Center and providing appropriate documentation.

Documentation on file for the applicant must meet the following criteria:

1. clearly state the diagnosed disability or disabilities
2. describe the functional limitations resulting from the disability or disabilities

3. be current — i.e., completed within the last 2 years for LD, last six months for psychiatric disabilities, or last three years for ADHD and all other disabilities (NOTE: this requirement does not apply to physical or sensory disabilities of a permanent or unchanging nature)

4. include complete educational, developmental, and medical history relevant to the disability for which testing accommodations are being requested

5. include a list of all test instruments used in the evaluation report and relevant subtest scores used to document the stated disability (this requirement does not apply to physical or sensory disabilities of a permanent or unchanging nature)

6. describe the specific accommodations requested

7. adequately support each of the requested testing accommodation(s)

8. be typed or printed on official letterhead and be signed by an evaluator qualified to make the diagnosis (include information about license or certification and area of specialization).

Residence Life Services

in housing that is handicapped accessible, if they have the required documentation and make a
written request for special housing by March 1. New students must have their documentation
of special housing needs and a written request submitted to the Academic Skills Office and the
Office of Residence Life by June 15 to receive accommodation in accessible housing. After the
due deadlines dates housing will be signed based on availability.

There are several Residence Hall options available for a student with a disability.

Luksic Hall provides single rooms with handicapped accessible private or semi-private bathrooms.

upper-class students.
Flood Hall has one apartment for handicapped accessibility. (Please note Flood Hall is located on a hill above the main part of campus).
Gateway Corners Apartment Building has two apartments for handicapped accessibility for upper-class students which are located on the third and fourth floor and are accessible by an elevator.
